Press Query from Mail on Sunday regarding Eamon Casey and Diocesan Response of 22 March 2019

Statement from Limerick Diocese

The diocese of Limerick can confirm that it is aware of three complaints of child sexual abuse by Bishop Eamonn Casey, who was ordained in Limerick in 1951 and moved to the UK in 1960.  The complaints relate to the 1950s and 1960s.

In each of the three cases - one of which was reported to the diocese in 2001, another in 2005 and the third in 2014 - An Garda Síochána were notified by the Diocese of Limerick.  The matters were also brought to the attention of the Church authorities.

Two of the cases were brought directly to the diocese’s attention, by the complainant in one instance and on behalf of the complainant in the second.  The third matter was brought to the diocese’s attention via a diocese in the UK.

Of the two complaints raised with the diocese directly, one was dealt with through the redress board and a settlement was agreed in the other.  The third matter has not involved litigation but contact was initiated by Limerick Diocese with the complainant.

The diocese of Limerick has not required and does not require any conditions to be part of any settlement.

The Diocese encourages any person who has any concerns about a child protection matter to contact either Tusla, An Garda Síochána or the Diocesan Safeguarding Service, telephone 087 3233564.
